Pleating Project
Guest workshop lecturer, Mike Tanis, taught pleating techniques by folding paper in certain directions to make pleat sandwiches that can then be used to heat set fabric. Techniques were then applied to the design challenge to create a garment with 9 yards of beige organza--as this organza could be heat set and permanently pleated.
Ultimately, used two types of pleat sandwiches in two scales for all pieces of the garment. Considered the size of each piece when cutting out the rectangular pieces of fabric to decrease waste and maximize usage of the fabric. All raw edges were overlock stitched to, functionally, prevent fraying and as a design wise, to add pops of color that gradated from pink/orange to yellow/green. A basic muslin dress with fish eye darts and an invisible zipper was constructed as the base of the garment where each pleated piece was hand-tacked to.
